Richard C. Morse papers, 1841-1961 (bulk 1880-1910).

The collection includes correspondence, reports, speeches, lecture notes, and other papers documenting Morse's fifty-year career with the YMCA, touching on topics including the International Committee, personnel matters, YMCA work with the African American community, the growth of the YMCA, YMCA secretaryship, and the war relief effort. Charles Kellogg Ober was born May 5, 1856 in Beverly, Mass., and attended Williams College (1879-1883). He developed an early interest in the Young Men's Christian Association which led to his appointment as assistant to Robert R. McBurney, Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. of the City of New York, in 1882. Ober married Julia Dodge in 1883, and served as State Secretary of the Massachusetts Y.M.C.A. from 1883 to 1884. Richard C. Morse, born in 1841 in Hudson, New York, was a journalist, Prebyterian minister, and prominent leader in the YMCA, where he served as editor and publisher of the Association News and as general secretary of the YMCA's Executive Committee (later the International Committee) from 1872 to 1915.
